Government Initiatives are Likely to
Augment the Transition to Eco-Friendly Straws
Government initiatives to ban
plastic are a big relief to society. Strict regulatory standards can lead to a
substantial reduction in the consumption rate of plastic disposable straws. To
reduce trash and protect the environment, the European Parliament approved a
law for 2021 that bans the use of 10 single-use plastic goods such as
straws, plates, cutlery and cotton bud sticks. The United Kingdom has
also implemented a similar plan that bans the use of plastic straws, stirrers
and cotton swabs with plastic stems. Similarly, the fourth Friday of February
every year has been declared as National Skip the Straw Day, a day to focus on
the impact of single-use plastics and efforts to stem the tide of trash
and waste. Plastic has become synonymous with environmental pollution in all of
its forms, whether on land, in water or in the air. According to the Eco-Cycle
organisation, 1.6 straws are used on average by each person (in the US) per
day, and 500 Mn straws per day. Based on this national average, each person in
the United States use 38,000 or more straws between the ages of 5 and 65. People
are becoming more aware of the need of reusable straws as a result of such
stunning numbers. Reduce, reuse, and recycle have all failed to alter the
dynamics of plastic pollution caused by straw use. Globally, 79% of plastic
trash is disposed of in landfills, dumps or the environment; 12% is burnt; and
just 9% is recycled. Furthermore, the startup has been collaborating with
tribal people in India's northeast to develop bamboo cutlery, packaging and
straws. For example, Bambrew secured about US$ 2.35 Mn in pre-Series A
fundraising in January 2022. The growing emphasis on sustainability through
numerous government initiatives is projected to boost revenues of eco-friendly
straws significantly.
Foodservice Industry Plays A Crucial
Role in The Eco-Friendly Straw Market
The foodservice industry is the
primary consumer of environmentally friendly straws. Increased demand for food
services throughout the world is pushing greater demand for environmentally
friendly straws. According to the American Restaurant Association, the
foodservice industry will generate US$ 997 Bn in revenue in 2023. All catering
and hospitality sectors are environmentally conscious and promote eco-friendly
dishes, cutlery and straws. Eco-friendly straws are being used in bars,
restaurants and cafés to add an elegant touch to the dining experience.
According to the Travel and Tourism Research Association, more than 170 Mn
Americans visited an eatery on a daily basis in 2018. The adoption rate
of eco-friendly products has an impact on food and beverage sector trends and
styles. Straw manufacturers are focusing on new designs to attract more
customers, such as star-shaped, striped, polka dots and others. Approximately
500 Mn plastic straws are discarded in the United States every day, but in past
few months, restaurant and hotel businesses have preferred eco-friendly straws.
Easy to Customization, Low Cost and
High Consumption Drive Segment’s Expansion
Non-printed straight straws are
expected to have substantial demand over the forecast period. These non-printed
straws generally preferred over printed straws since they have no markings and
are suitable for a variety of applications. There have been reports of ink from
printed straws leaking into beverages, which might be harmful to human 's
health. Due to these factors, non-printed straws are preferred by a number of
different businesses. Sun-Rype Products, a division of A. Lassonde Inc., a
Canadian manufacturer of fruit-based food and beverages, announced in 2021 that
they have replaced all plastic straws on all SunRype 200ml single-serve
beverage packages in Canada with a recyclable, bendable paper straw.
High Costs of Paper Straws Is Likely to Be
A Challenge for Market Players
Paper straws are less durable
than plastic straws, becoming mushy and dissolving in fluids despite their
higher price. According to packaging manufacturers, paper straws are more
costly than plastic straws due they require binders, additives and high-quality
sheets. Additionally, the production of paper eco-friendly straws requires the
clearing of broad areas of forest, which has enraged environmentalists,
government entities and activists. Reduced forest cover contributes to rising
pollution levels. According to these trends, the global sector is projected to
face significant challenges over the coming years.
On Jan 11, 2023 The Sulapac
Company released a statement that it has successfully manufactured the straw
from wood chips which are sourced sustainably and plant-based binders, so it
dissolves naturally without leaving behind any microplastics.
SIG India has launched recyclable
paper straws. SIG on July 2022, a leading producer of aseptic carton packaging
systems and solutions, has introduced a variety of recyclable paper straws in a
variety of sizes, shapes, and uses.
Nestle introduced environmentally
friendly paper straws for its chocolate beverage - Milo, on September 2021.
This initiative was launched in collaboration with the Royal Challengers
Bangalore (RCB) of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Milo's beverage packets
with paper straws are sold throughout India. Through this effort, Nestlé aims
to remove 30 Mn plastic straws.
In July 2022, Lamipak - an in
aseptic packaging solution provider, launched their high quality U-shape paper
straw solutions in India.

Eco-Friendly Straws Are Gaining Traction in
The Asia-Pacific Region
The increasing hospitality
industry in the Asia-Pacific region is likely to drive market expansion during
the forecast period. The hospitality industry is a big end-user of paper straws
and the increasing number of grocery shops has considerably increased demand.
Consumer behaviour in the food and beverage industry has shifted dramatically.
There is significant opportunity for multinational food and beverage companies
to establish or expand their presence in Asia-Pacific markets. The availability
of numerous innovative drink varieties and rising millennial demand are driving
the Asia-Pacific functional beverage market's rapid expansion. The busy
lifestyles of the region's rising urban middle-class population, as well as a
lack of energy and micronutrients in an individual’s diet, fuel the demand
for functional beverages. These are some of the primary driving factors that
generate market growth opportunities.
